Winter 2025

November into Early Winter

Winter arrived with a stride this year, and life in Martindale quickly adapted to the rhythm of weather, roadworks, and the community.

Road Closure: A Test of Patience

On the 4th November, the road into the valley closed for essential drainage improvements, tree works and resurfacing. What was originally scheduled as a two‑week project soon stretched into a full month, as the winter weather took control.

The second week brought storms, followed by icy conditions in the third, and then the first proper snow on the fells. For locals, this made access slow and uncertain, especially as the road was closed daily from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Residents, Farmers and tradespeople had to carefully plan each day around these hours.

This may not sound too severe, but when restrictions run day after day, week after week, the disruption to daily life can be significant. very disruptive . With Christmas approaching and conditions worsening, the sensible decision was taken to pause the works and return after the New Year, when weather and daylight offer a better chance of completion.

Pooley Bridge Pier

Meanwhile, Pooley Bridge Pier closed for strengthening works — another necessary project sensibly scheduled for the quieter winter months. Progress has been challenging in difficult conditions, but it is  reassuring to see important infrastructure being cared for, ready for a busy season ahead.

Howtown Cottages and Our Community Over the Festive Period

Despite the challenges, the season brought moments of warmth and togetherness. The annual Carol Service at St Peter’s Church was once again wonderfully attended. As always, it drew not only locals but visitors from further afield, filling the church with music, candlelight and a strong sense of shared community — a true highlight of the winter calendar.

It was lovely to see all our cottages full over the festive period, with guests enjoying the peace of the valley, the celebrations, and the beautifully bright, cold winter days. Their presence helps support the local community, and we hope many were able to share in the carol service and take home a little of what makes this place so special.

Wildlife at the Doorstep

As temperatures dropped, nature moved closer to home. Woodpeckers, nuthatches and goldfinches returned in force to the bird feeders, joined by ever‑hopeful squirrels. Winter is always a busy time at the feeders — a daily reminder of how wildlife adapts and finds sustenance wherever it can.

Time of year …...

I also see that the Seville oranges have arrived so that certainly tells me that the marmalade is on the way together with the rest of our home made chutneys which complement the meals available during our exclusive use weekends and in the tearoom.

So, as we look ahead to the 2026 season, we thank you for spending time reading our winter diary and look forward to welcoming you back to Howtown for another year of stunning scenery and warm hospitality.
