As we come to the end of another season here at Howtown, we would like to thank all those who have visited us — whether in the tearoom, in one of our lovely cottages, or for an exclusive weekend at the hotel.

Our tearoom has been a wonderful attraction this year. We have welcomed so many guests, and it has been a joy to see the tearoom so alive with friendly local faces and visitors from near and far. Everything is freshly prepared, and while that sometimes means a slightly longer wait, we believe the result is always worth it.

Our exclusive-use weekends at the hotel continue to flourish. These special occasions — where the hotel is reserved for wedding parties, birthday celebrations or simply a bringing together of family and friends — have been so well received, and all feedback has been truly heartwarming. We are already in conversation with guests who are planning ahead for 2026.

No diary would be complete without a rundown of the weather. We’re delighted to report that this summer treated us kindly, with long, beautiful days and still evenings casting a magical spell over Howtown and the whole of Martindale.

Now, as the trees begin to turn, the autumn colours are spectacular. Although the air is cooler, there’s that familiar feeling of change. The deer have come lower into the valley, and the sound of the stags pervades the air.

Howtown Cottages, as always, offer a peaceful retreat for those seeking comfort and quiet. Nestled into the landscape, they remain open all year round — often at their most tranquil during the autumn / winter months.

So, as the leaves begin to fall, we prepare to close for the winter and would like to thank you for visiting our autumn diary. Whether you’ve popped in for lunch, stayed in a cottage, or celebrated something special with us at the hotel, your presence is invaluable in helping create the atmosphere that we feel is so unique to Howtown.
