As the season of renewal begins, we’re delighted to share our latest news from Howtown and reflect on the months gone by, with a renewed focus on offering the very best of Howtown to you.
We’ve enjoyed an unusually dry and bright spring this year – a rare treat for the Lakes. The low lake levels and dry ground have certainly been noticeable, and visitors over Easter were lucky enough to enjoy some spring sunshine. Easter also saw the first of our exclusive-use weekends at the Hotel – these special occasions, when the hotel is reserved for gatherings of family and friends, continue to be well received. We've had some lovely feedback, and if you're curious about how these weekends work or are considering booking one, do get in touch – we are now taking bookings for 2026.
We were thrilled to see Howtown Hotel make a brief appearance during the filming of Michael Portillo’s Great British Railway Journeys whilst he was in Cumbria . The programme beautifully captured the timeless charm of the area, and we were especially proud to see members of our local community featured – including a group of residents who were filmed litter picking as part of their ongoing commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the Lakes. If you missed it, the episode is available to watch on catch-up – and we hope it inspires you to plan a visit!
Visit BBC 2 Catch-up to witness the stunning views of Martindale Valley as Michael meets with the Friends of the Lake District. The programme also features a visit to local farmer Garry Miller of Miller Farming, where Michael is introduced to native Herdwick and Rough Fell sheep and even tries his hand at herding with the help of sheepdog Pick. Later, Michael visits the home of Thermafleece, the UK's first sheep’s wool insulation company based in Dacre, to find out from Managing Director Mark Lynn why wool makes such an exceptional natural insulator.
Our holiday cottages, nestled in the peace and tranquillity of Howtown, offer a perfect escape from the demands of everyday life. Whether you come to walk, unwind, or simply be still, the cottages provide the ideal base to experience the landscape at your own pace.
Guests staying in the cottages continue to enjoy delicious food from Colin in the Howtown Kitchen. Meals are thoughtfully prepared and served in portions for four – ideal for sharing in the comfort of your cottage. Orders can be placed via the Hotel or the Tearoom, and menus are available there or on request before your stay.
The Howtown Tea Room is now open for the 2025 season, serving from 10:30am to 4:00pm daily. Expect the familiar favourites – homemade soups and breads, hearty sandwiches, Diane’s renowned sausage rolls, and an irresistible range of scones and cakes. We’re always delighted to welcome returning guests and look forward to meeting new visitors too.
As ever, nature sets the tone here. Our red squirrels have wintered well and remain a delightful sight for all who visit. Spring has made itself known – the daffodils have been particularly spectacular this year, just now fading, while our magnolia tree is full of promise and on the brink of a beautiful display. We’re hoping for gentle weather and no late frosts to let the blooms shine.
As always, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back to Howtown – a place where memories are made and time slows down, just a little.
With warmest wishes, The Howtown Team
